Dr Lindsay Hallam

Lindsay Hallam is a Senior Lecturer and co-Course Leader in Film. She is the author of two books, Marquis de Sade: Pleasure, Pain and the Transgressive Body in Film, published by McFarland in 2012, and wrote a volume for the Devil's Advocates series on David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, published in 2018 by Auteur Press. She has also written for several peer-reviewed journals and anthologies about different aspects of horror cinema. Lindsay also writes outside of academia, for publications such as Sight & Sound, The Conversation, the BFI, Biff Bam Pop!, and The Blue Rose Magazine, and had provided essays and audio commentaries for Blu-Ray releases from Arrow, Indicator, Severin Films, Second Sight and Vinegar Syndrome.

 

Lindsay has also produced short films and directed a documentary, Fridey at the Hydey (2013) and some music videos. They Called Me David (2021), a horror/sci-fi short film that she directed, produced and edited, premiered at Frightfest London in August 2021 and has since screened at festivals around the world.

Professor Valentina Vitali

Dr Valentina Vitali is Professor of Film Studies at the University of East London and co-director of the Centre for Creative and Cultural Practice (CCP, UEL). Her research explores the intersection of economics, history and film aesthetics from a comparative perspective. Publications include Capital and Popular Cinema, Hindi Action Cinema, and Theorising National Cinema (co-edited with Paul Willemen). She has curated, among other events, Contemporary South Asian Films by Women (FACT, Liverpool) and Alia Syed: Recent Works (Whitechapel Gallery, London). She is currently working on a AHRC-funded project on video online distribution and independent cinema in South Asia.

Dr Johannes Maier

Johannes Maier is a senior lecturer in Film at the University of East London and co-director of the Moving Image Research Centre (UEL). His films document events in which he collaborates with people and institutions such as interpreters at the European Commission and a newsroom picture editor at the BBC. The focus of Maier’s work, intentionally positioned at the boundaries of art, documentary and media, is a critical engagement with televisual forms. His work has been shown internationally in group- and solo exhibitions, as well as in film festivals including: New Contemporaries, East International, the Short Film Festival of Oberhausen, and Kunstverein Bielefeld.

Teresa Duran

Teresa Duran is a filmmaker and editor. She has worked for many years a freelance, combining personal projects with collaborations with charities or other organisations, in particular in East London. She also graduated on Film at UEL and was awarded after graduating for her contribution to the program. In May, 2020 she was awarded again for her work within the technical team, with Honourable Mention within the category of Student Experience. 

 

Her last project, Digging Deeper (UK, Spain, 2020) is an hour documentary that deals with the Spanish civil war and the British volunteers that went to fight fascism to Spain in 1936. The teaser of the film was screened in different venues in London, such as East End Film Festival, Close Up and Whitechapel Gallery.

Dr David
Chapman

Dr David Chapman is senior lecturer in Media Production and the course leader of MA Filmmaking. David is a documentary filmmaker, media artist and researcher with a special interest in sound and image interaction. He creates video and multichannel sound pieces for galleries and site-specific exhibitions, in the UK and internationally.  David's most recent work investigates the sonic mediation of the natural world, the durational dimensions of place, and historical and cultural issues through audio-visual installations.

Julian Alexander

Julian Alexander is a filmmaker from Las Cruces, New Mexico. A graduate of New Mexico State University’s Creative Media Institute, Julian continued his studies at the Northern Film School in Leeds, UK where he received his MFA producing and directing numerous film projects, including the Royal Student Television Award nominated short, Léo.

 

Julian has previously taught film production at universities in New Mexico and Texas. He has a passion for new media and alternative storytelling methods. Julian has written, directed, and starred in a phone-based web series titled Bad JuJu and his most recent production Layla, At Last, funded by the Sharjah Art Foundation shot in Spain and Morocco. When he is not leading a film set, Julian is leading a classroom. Julian is now working towards his PhD producing films using rap as the main storytelling instrument.

Alexander Thomas

Alexander Thomas is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for Media Production. He is also a screenwriter and film director. His short films have won numerous awards and his last film, Beverley, was longlisted for the 2017 Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Live Action Short.

 

As well as filmmaking Alexander has an active research interest in the ethics of transhumanism in the era of advanced capitalism. He has published articles and book reviews related to this subject and was a guest on BBC Radio 4’s Thinking Allowed.
